The traditional model is complicated by compensation
For employers who are laser-focused on fiduciary stewardship, sometimes they don’t get the full picture:
1) Pay to Play Platforms
Some platforms crowd out competition and create profits for large brokers (like supermarket “slotting fees”)
2) Incentive Misalignment
Incentive compensation plans that only pay 1st year misalign commissions with the extended period of service delivery.
3) Heaped Compensation
This leads brokers to opt for “heaped” vs. level compensation, which can run as high as 75% for certain products.
4) Low Claims Ratios
Heaped compensation in year 1 also forces insurance companies to seek low loss ratios for future years to earn their target ROI.
5) Contingent Income
Further exacerbating the problem, many brokers also accept additional contingent bonuses based upon program profitability.
6) Suppress Transparency
All of this leads to reluctance by the insurance industry to transparently report claims and compensation due to poor optics.
7) Consulting Bank
Excessive Comp in year 1 creates a “bank” for services controlled by the broker; eventually bank balances run low…
8) Enrollment Flywheel
So face-to-face enrollment firms, often owned by the broker, are engaged to periodically re-enroll your employees with new carriers.
9) Carrier Hopping
…and then brokers recommend changing carriers every three years to chase heaped compensation once again – it’s a vicious cycle.

BeneRe’s model fundamentally changes the way the game is played. Commissions come down, transparency goes up and the lower the claims, the higher the dividend for reinvestment for employees.
Typically employees receive a 10% cost reduction, strong enhancements to plan designs and employers receive dividends for benefits reinvestment. Employees are the biggest winners in the BeneRe model.

Sean began his benefits career with a top 3 national health insurance carrier in 1994 as group benefits sales representative and account executive before moving on to work as a Sales Consultant in commercial risk and benefits for a global brokerage and consulting firm. Sean joined Henderson Brothers out of a desire to provide world-class expertise and resources along with a superior client experience.
During Sean’s tenure at Henderson Brothers, he has served on the Management Team, Innovation Team and Benefits Practice’s Operations Team. In addition to leading growth efforts for the Strategic Accounts market, Sean uses market feedback to design solutions that exactly meet the needs of Henderson Brothers’ clients.
Sean helps clients develop unique strategies that improve workforce health by identifying and reducing modifiable risk factors. His passion is in the deployment of alternative risk financing solutions that enable the use of advanced analytics for clients of all sizes. Sean believes that by optimizing his clients’ investment in employee benefits, employers can leverage workforce health as a competitive advantage.
Sean serves as a client advocate, connecting the partner-evaluation process to service delivery. He is responsible for team leadership throughout the sales process, as well as client relationship management post-sale. He ensures that client expectations are exceeded by making certain that both the Henderson Brothers and client teams have the time, expertise, and resources necessary to achieve the client’s strategic goals.

Voluntary Benefits Leader
Jennifer began her career as a Benefits Consultant with National Consulting firm in the 1980’s. She brings 35+ years of experience and knowledge to the Employee Benefits team. Prior to Henderson Brothers, she worked with multiple insurance companies and brokers in various sales and management positions. In the past 20 years, her primary focus of expertise has been in the ancillary benefits arena of worksite voluntary benefits as well as life, disability, dental and vision.
Jennifer helps clients develop unique strategies to develop new or improved healthcare worksite or financial protection benefit programs to meet the needs of their diverse employee population and assist with attracting and retaining valued employees. Her passion is to find the best plans while reviewing funding solutions including voluntary, employer paid or alternative insurance solutions.
Jennifer is responsible for providing consulting and expertise as our ancillary benefits expert focused on worksite voluntary benefits. Jennifer works in collaboration with our consultative team to support the implementation and execution of strategy throughout the process. She works directly with employers to deliver innovative and effective benefit options through worksite voluntary benefit plans, including supporting employee communications, enrollment assistance and technology solutions.
